cant work tonight. My feet are.. numbed

Wanted to continue marking my sec 4 geo papers. Cant do it. Need a break. so decided to update my blog a little. To be honest, nowadays i am alot more careful when I write here. Somehow after an experience, my freedom of speech here has being compromised. Even though this blog was meant to be my personal diary,  I realised something are better left unsaid.

it has been a long day today, stay till almost six in school due to the NDP rehearsal, had to guide my NCC boys on their drills. Fun bunch the lot of them, so motivated towards their drills. They even wanted to march in the rain, but I had to intervene and breakup the drill session, cant afford to let them fall sick. They remind me of LN and the NCC boys back during my own sec school days. Very "on" towards their NCC, willing to spend long hours on it. Guiding them was a throwback to army days, cos I got to use the same drills. But of course, I try to infused in them, that drills is  not all to being a soldier, there is a lot more to it. May consider letting them have a feel of small team tactics. Conduct an ambush?hmm maybe haha..

Anyway, what life has been to be lately? Work, work and more work. Am beginning to get the hang of things dealing with the heavy load on my shoulders.  Boss is always asking me to relax and chill out whenever i can. He wants me to be able to last in teaching  and eventually shoulder the heavier  appointments to come. Got two functions to attend this week. One is a chalet, and one's a national day dinner by some bigshot.  Am I a teacher or a diplomat? I wonder. Of course I cant compare with boss's  load when it comes to functions, he is truly the diplomat for the school. After breakfast with him one morning, I realised alot of the schools function were fundedby his contacts. His diplomacy has worked silently in the background. The expensive wakeboarding course that I attended recently were funded by one of those important friends of his.

Socially wise life has been quite quiet, still going out with some friends now and then. But largely the constaint of work has set in. Met up with LS, SH and JSM during the weekend. Meeting up with JSM was probably the most embarrasing thing of all that happened during the weekend.
Wanted to meet up for drinks later in the night. So decided to chill out a bit by dressing down in T shirt and shorts.  Well...eh luckily I ran out of shorts, so had to wear jeans.

Drove out, pick her up from cityhall. Oh mine, she was dressed in an evening gown, the really really classy kind. Apparently she jus attended a wedding dinner. So I am really underdressed when standing next to her. Anyway, Indochine ran out of parking lots so  decided to have coffee at the airport instead. Less people there as well :P it was kinda awkward as some people do stared, but after a while got used to it. Talk alot of about wats being going on, it was relaxing. But got a bit sleepy at the end of it, cos havent been sleeping enough the whole week.

Well, met up with GD and SH on friday night also. Had coffee and found out that one of SH's friend was an long lost classmate of mine and GD. What a small world! Anyway, was quite surprised that SH can be so er...chatty.. :) Havent been able to talk much to her when i first met her. And she does have a queer habit of opening boxes and glove compartments, even if she had opened them before. It was a good evening, GD and I was so bored before she came. But she made the evening so much more lively.

Thats all for now. Time for bed!!

Pics from Jandakort Perth

Have gotten some pics from JS in Perth, glad he is settling down there well and oh mine, really envy his flying over there. The scenery is spectacular and the plane is really a more modern version of the one that I flew. Let's hope he goes solo soon in the Cessna 172.:P

What the difference?

July 2004 Teaching days
Its 5.30 in the evening, my teaching day has just ended. My backpack on my back, my laptop bag slinged over my shoulders as I trudge the stairs to my home. My sweaty monkey suit (long sleeve shirt) sticking to my back. Entering my home, I kicked off my dust covered, black dress shoes. Took a final glance at my sweaty Seiko,  and removed it together with my wallet onto the counter.

Walked to my room, dumped the laptop and backpack onto the floor, and and started unbuttoning the monkey suit. My T-shirt is drenched and I smell of pespiration, marker ink and old paper smell. Deodorant still fighting hard to keep the peace. Face covered with a sheen of oil and occasionally a stroke of marker ink.

Slumped onto the floor. And closed my eyes for a moment. Feeling super sleepy and fatigued. Opened my eyes, glance at the backpack and laptop, my mind already on the stacks of assignments to be marked and lessons to be prepared. Things to be sorted out.

August 1998 Infantry days

Its 5.30 in the evening a four day exercise has just ended,  got out of the Mercedes jeep, removed my full pack from the bumper rack, slinged on my rifle, helmet and full pack. Started climbing the four stories up to my bunk. My three day old salt and sweat stained uniform already half unbuttoned. Entering my bunk, I drop my helmet onto the floor with a loud thump. Dumped my rifle onto my bed board,  removed my webbing and dumped it on the floor. Took a final glance at my mud stained Casio and removed it together with the First Aid Dressing in my shirt pocket.

Took off the sweaty shirt, pulled a chair and slumped down on it. I smell of sweat, gun oil, cordite and insect repellent. Face covered with oil and a layer of caked camouflage paint. Closed my eyes for a moment. Feeling super sleepy and fatigued. Opened my eyes,  glanced at the mud-caked boots, the slightly rusted, heavily carbonised rifle, and muddy webbing. My mind already on the rifle to be cleaned and the jeep to be washed. Together with a mutitude of equipment to be washed. There are things to be sorted out.

What's the difference?......

Out with the Meiling street gang

It was a hectic day yesterday, was out in the morning for my ncc session and then after that met KT, WQ and Jun for lunch, it has been quite a while since i last saw KT, now I understand why she is reluctant to cut her hair.... had thai food lunch at Lot 1 and then coffee at westmall. There, we sat for a good few hours jus chatting and stoning...literally. Was suppose to met CL and gang at five. But was jus too tired to make my way there on time.

Ended up meeting them at six at Mei Ling Street my old home. SW's mum saw me drove up to the shop and was so suprised..I know what was in her mind. She is simply  not used to seeing us all grown up and now all driving all around. After all, it was in front of her shop that I finally learnt how to ride a bicycle in my primary school days. JL was asked to present the gift that CL and gang had bought, was suprised to find her along for the birthday dinner. I thought this year it would be a real quiet all guys deal. It was rather embarrasing as well, with SW's mum looking over and grinning away at me.

After that we all piled into my vehicle and went down to bugis to have "malai" hot pot. The restaurants are all packed and we had to queue for quite a while. Finally, we managed to get into one of the restaurants and had our dinner. The food was hot and really "hot". I couldnt eat too much of it as it was far too spicy for me to eat properly. But it was good to be able to have a good hot pot dinner with the gang again. It was like back to the days of Marina South nights out during our Secondary school days. It is always a joy to have dinner with these guys, after all we have all known each other for more than 10 years.

We then rushed off to the theater after that to watch king Arthur, it was an entertaining movie that is reminiscence of the Lord of the Rings on a budget. All the stars are virtually unknown. The gang was complaining that the guy being cast as Arthur wasnt "kingly enough. it was fine for me.

After movie, CL took us down to IndoChine at Empress Place. He said that it is a place I must go and so we went. Upon reaching there, I found that it was actually a branch of our hang out place Sieam Reap at Holland V. And found that the crew working there were all from Holland V, especially the charming lady which CL always looks out for when we used to go to Sieam Reap. We stopped going to the Holland V place because of the crew change and bad service. The waitresses recognise us. But the menu have all changed. No more Vietnamese coffee...:( The place have become so classy with chandleliers, a grand ambience and a stunning view of the Singapore river. Lots of yuppies were hanging around there. So it wasnt as comfortable as before. The place seems to have become so much more formal. Still rememeber That we used to go down in T shirt and shorts. Now, it will be very strange to wear the same attire there.

Maybe I was too sensitive, but during the time there, SW kept asking me to talk and  cheer JL up, I have a feeling that the gang was trying to match both JL and me together. Jus like what my big Sis have doing, always promoting that her assistant is a nice and capable gal. I know she is a very nice and patient person. But I guess I am still tired, from all things related to emotions.

will complete this later..

One friday evening..

jus came back from dinner with WH and Viv at Tampinese Mall, it was a pre birthday dinner for me. Am really glad for the treat, a big thanks to the both of them. Tomorrow CL and gang will be up to something, still not sure wat that is. They are still keeping me in the dark about it..hmmmm..

Anyway, the week has been a sickly week for me, yep I had three days of MC for this week, on the third day, my boss called up but I left my handphone at home when I went off to see the doc. Anyway Dad pick up the call and oh mine...he and my boss talked for more than 20 min!!!

Dad was concerned cos he was asking things like why is my son stressed out and so on. Cos he have been seeing me working incessantly day and night. My boss answered that I am still not experienced enough and have to learn not to be so uptight about problems and admin matters. I know my boss is training me up to be like him and perharps take over him when he retires. But I do find it too big a bite for me. Anyway, Dad and him talked for a long time and they even had a debate about the pro and cons of the decreasing the strength of the Singapore dollar!!! I guess its because both of them are about the same age and have alot to discuss about. However, it really felt as if I have gone back to be a student and the teacher is calling up the parent to talk about the child when he is absent!

Boss seems to be sending me out for alot of functions and dinners, I know he is the chief "diplomat" for the school, in raising funds, getting talent to join the school and liasesing between overseas and local institutions for exchange program. He always seems to have a contact with anyone that is rich or influential like the ministers. After all he has been to China as an envoy during Deng Xiaoping's time. So I wonder, is this part of the training? Am I really gonna have to be a diplomat after all? I would like that in a way, cos my political science training will be put to use. But too big a bite for a beginning teacher right?

Questions in my mind?, fatigue...need to sleep.

Gathering of the generals...the last war game

Went down to Paradiz centre on friday evening to meet up with SJ and JS for our final session on C & C generals before one of our "generals" JS leave for Australia on Monday. Due to work as well as fatigue, I started late and joined them only at eight. We had two good rounds.

In the first round, things got really exciting, SJ's frontline was breached and enemies were pouring in the lines from his side. JS and I immediatly sent reinforcements to his side. Biological bombs, huge Emperor tanks were sent over immediately. We were very close to losing that round so our adrenaline was pumping. We were continously cursing and shouting instructions throughout that whole hour or so. It was a good round, and we eventually won after a long battle.

The second round was much easier with one less enemy and a more forgiving terrain, six months of training showed up in the game. We were no longer rookies to the game, we were experts!!!

Yep it has being six months when since we discovered the joy of lan gaming, all three of us adults getting hooked like kids and faithfully making our pligrimage to Paradiz centre whenever time permits. One teacher, one pilot, one IT consultant playing alongside with the heaps of teenagers hanging out there. Hey there are adults there also alright..haha

Yes its kinda sad to know that the three of us wont be able to play together for a year. Now its left with only two generals, SJ and me. After six months of training, from constantly being thrashed by the computer to winning battle after battle. We have came a long way. Well, now unless JS gets a internet connection, plus a copy of the game from Australia, it will be a long time before our next "war"

After the game, we went for supper and had a really sinful supper. Mee goreng, murtabak, teh and milo kosong. After all, JS wont get to eat all this for a long time.
We stay till almost one. Before the pary broke up..had an invigilation session on sat morning so cant stay too late.

SJ took leave on monday to send off JS, wish i could do that, alas the life of a teacher, got no leave. After all, I once sent AJ off when he left for Australia for his flight training as well. Seems that I cant do it this time. Maybe AJ will be the pilot flying JS off to Australia.

Well thats all for now. Got to rush off for a dinner with Tuck, havent seen him for a long while.

feeling down tonight...dunno why

here's a song, i jus found...nice and sentimental.

(Bridge)

was humbled by my boss today...

Went into my sec three class with my arsenal of powerpoint slides, animations, my laptop and my wireless mouse etc..was to teach on the topic on river development and drainage patterns.

I explained long and hard on the concept of drainage basin and watershed. The colours and graphics flashed on the screen while the students remained open mouthed and confused about the topic. My boss supposedly also my co teacher for the class (a geo HOD) walked in. Looked at the screen and ask for the class attention.

With a few strokes of his blue marker on the white board, a few words from him. The concept was delivered. The understanding reached. He doesn't even have the sec three textbook at all. Am humbled....greatly humbled.

Talked to him in the next lesson when we were coaching the sec four classes together. He jus looked at me and said. "Dun worry Mr Hoo, it takes time, give yourself time to acquire that skill. Use your visual aids, they are good."

What more can I say, his relaxed demanour, his simplicity... zero preparation needed. efficent delivery. Hopefully can attained that in due course.

Of teaching, lunch, church, supper, midnight spin and Greece WON!!!

Yesterday was a day filled with lots of activities, but absolute zero on work. Woke up and taught in the morning..It was challenging as I did not have any biology background but since my neighbour needed some coaching on the concepts. I had to learn on my feet and absorb the concepts faster and explain them to her. The Maltose and starch differentiation was difficult but after a while, managed to see the light and explained it.

After the session, went out to have lunch before starting work. Decided to meet up with friends for lunch. Called up a few friends, finally managed to pull JSM out of her work and went for lunch at Log One. Talk over lunch only to find out that RJC was quite a conducive workplace to be in. Their official release hours for teachers was 1230pm. AArgh...mine is 330pm sigh... anyway, updated each other of our lives and did some more shopping. She bought hamster stuff and I a sec one geo text book.

Returning home, didnt managed to get anything done. My flight instructor called up earlier to tell me that so the aircraft is unservicable and had to return to the hangar for maintainance. So the flight on monday noon is cancelled. With the load of preflighting off my shoulders. I decided to go down to LL's church to watch her perform. Was apprehensive of going down initially, because partly because of the "Jerry Maguire" syndrome and also partly, I knew I wasnt ready to trust in Him again.

Went down and was almost late. It was a little church off tiong bahru, the congregation was small and traditional. Saw my colleague there. It was a real coincidence, my collegue turned out to be LL friend and LL had ask her to help look out for a friend that was coming. And that friend turned out to be me!!

The performance was a simple affair and LL did her little jig...hahaha..not much of a dance. Well, now let me explained a little by what I mean by the "Jerry Maguire" syndrome. Well, LL even though she never knew it, was my first crush during secondary and JC years. Spent a few years mulling over her..haha before I moved on. Lost contact for a few years before meeting up recently. But meeting up was a rather disorientating affair for me. Well, she is married now and has a child. So it was kind of surreal when you get to hold a child with her exact brown eyes and features. It was the kind of stuff that one only see in movies, but here i am right in the leading role of that "movie". So this is wat I meant by the "Jerry Maguire" syndrome. Wanna know how charming the Mum looks like? Clue, she looks like Jeaneatte AW.LOL

The first time I met up with her, the syndrome affected me quite a bit. It feels that while she has accomplished so much in her life. A warm and loving family, a wonderful child. While I have continously never left the holding patterns of relationships. Going in and out of them and then starting all over again each time it fails. That night as i was driving home, my mind was quite a mess, and a friend gave a disturbing "dun wish to talk" message . I knew trouble was on its way, and that messed me up even further.

But yesterday, it was fine.Jus got to accept the fact that sometimes we do live in movies sometimes. :P

After the church session, met up with CL for tea at Alif's. And that guy changed a brand new supposedly expensive phone again at a super cheap deal.Dunno how he always get these deals. Talk about soccer, work then went back to prepare for euro final.

Called LIM after that, and we decided to watch the finals outside. I drove out at midnight to pick him up, and after that AJ called. And we decided to go to AJ place to watch. Went for a spin at the changi airport runway first before going down to AJ place. AJ place was great for soccer watching with a huge projector screen and comfy sofas. He had just returned from Greece and had with him a packet of delicious greek nuts. To AJ the match held special meaning for he had saw how the celebrations going on in Greece. Some of his fellow crewmates was still hanging around in Greece as the finals was being played.

And Greece won!!! and I am somewhat richer...hehe...

Spider Man!!

Jus watched spider man!! Great show but the romance seems a little corny..and Peter sure looks like WH (in a way) hahaha..

watch it with WH and Viv, the second consecutive weekend that I have been out with the couple. Viv was rather moody today due to work related problems. Guess the movie will do her some good. JSM messaged to ask about the salsa course...should i take it up? Not too sure.Dun really know if i will have the time to learn.

Drove home slowly and quietly, thought about things. Then the nose started running on the road, must be the lack of sleep.Better catch some sleep..

Amidst the hectic life

Amidst all the buzz, sitting down in my room, saw some stuff, and began thinking again...thus being listening to this song once again.

Gathering of the flyboys

Jus came back from a late dinner cum coffee session in Orchard with AJ and JS. Call it the gathering of the flyboys.Sigh...my good buddy JS will be leaving on the 12 for a good year in Australia for his flight training. So this was a sort of farewell meet up us the three flyboys.

We talked alot today about flying tonight .. JS was very excited about going to Perth and he was asking AJ alot about flying over there, company policies etc and how it is to be flying on the fleet. If I were a layman...i would be confused by all the jargon. But I who probably has aviation fuel running through my veins was of course familar with all the talk.

Its about birdstrikes, catIII landings, tech papers, runway change, instrument flight, IPT, flares, baselegs, ABBA papers, flaps and the list goes on. These aviation jargons have been with me since I began to read...I started learning about all this since I was 10. I enjoy knowing them.

Traisi, cockpit, SOW, I & E, responsibility model, thinkfast....these are teaching jargons and they bored and irritate me.

Well, largely I envy both AJ and JS, being able to live and work with wat they are passionate about. They travel the world, flying big jets, flying for a living clocking hours and landing in exotic airports. Not to mention the prestige and money that is also the reward. But I know them, they are not those who fly because of the money or prestige. Its their love of being in the earth's upper reaches.
Its the same for me, except I would be earthbound largely except for brief periods of flight training.

Well, enjoyed their company greatly tonight, they were also discussing how to celebrate my solo flight when its comes along. They were going to sabotage me, airforce style with the egg and mud throwing? or jus spraying the plane and me with water. (civilised style):P Nah...know they wont let me off that easily.

Well, time for bed..will write more again.. JS flying off to perth on the 12th, AJ has a currency flight on the Cessna 172 tomorrow morning and then flying off to Athens in the evening in the Boeing777. Me a flight on the 5th on the Cessna 172, a youth day afternoon, the only time I can find to carry on with my flight lessons.

Alright roger and out.
